Schönhofen is a district of the market Nittendorf in the district of Regensburg . The place has around 1000 inhabitants. (As of June 30, 2015)

history

Schönhofen was first mentioned in a document in 1180. The families of Schönhofen, Muggenthal and Sauerzapf shaped the development of the place in the Middle Ages and the early modern period . Since the 16th century, numerous hammer mills have been of economic importance, some of which have been operated as mirror grinding since the 19th century, for example in the Drexlerschleife, which is still known today as the street name. The water power of the Schwarzen Laber was harnessed here . The small river flows directly through the place. The famous mountain cross, one of the landmarks of Schönhofen, was mentioned as early as the 17th century.

On July 1, 1972, Schönhofen was incorporated into Nittendorf.

Geography and nature

Schönhofen lies in one of the eastern foothills of the Franconian Jura . The chalk cliffs are well developed through the Jurasteig . Nature is shaped by the protected dry grass that predominates here .

Culture and sights

Schönhofen is known nationwide for its climbing rocks. The church of St. John the Baptist is located in the village . The tower was built on a rocky bank, the altar and pulpit date from the 17th century. In 2013 a new bridge was built over the Schwarze Laber. This is also equipped with a so-called Bruckmandl . In the Staimerhaus there are exhibitions of regional artists and the Naturfreundehaus offers overnight accommodation and information for hikers.
