Naturefriends houses emerged from the Naturefriends movement , which was founded by socialists in Vienna in 1895 . The first Naturfreundehaus was opened in 1907 on Padasterjoch in the Stubai Alps . With the Friends of Nature Houses, the Friends of Nature also wanted to enable workers to spend their free time in nature who were then denied access to civic associations and their huts. Naturefriends houses are inexpensive and are usually located in the middle of nature , often in the mountains, by the water or in the forest. They are clearly recognizable by the Friends of Nature logo and the name of the Friends of Nature.

Naturefriends houses are available from self-catering houses to hotel-like complexes, as recognized family holiday homes, holiday homes, town homes, hikers' cabins, boat houses or even pure club houses without overnight accommodation, from simple overnight stays to elaborated holiday offers and arrangements. They are used by nature lovers for club purposes, but are open to everyone. No membership is required to stay overnight, but members receive discounts.

There are more than 1,000 Naturefriends Houses worldwide, over 400 of them in Germany. The first Naturfreundehaus in Germany was opened in Maschen , between Lüneburg Heath and Hamburg , in 1911 .
