About this picture
Location of Maschen in Seevetal

Maschen is a place in the Seevetal municipality in the Harburg district in Lower Saxony . With 9086 inhabitants, 397 of them with secondary residence, Maschen is the second largest town in the municipality.

Location and districts

Friedenskirche in Maschen-Heide

Maschen is located at the transition from the Lüneburg Heath to the Winsener Elbmarsch on the Seeve . The location is mostly divided into a northern part ( Maschen village or Maschen place ) and a southern part ( Maschen-Heide or Maschen-Horst ). The dividing line is roughly represented by the course of Autobahn 39 .

Maschen-Ort is located in the area of the historic Elbe glacial valley and has high groundwater levels in sections. Maschen-Heide, on the other hand, is characterized by its elevated position on the wooded hill area of Die Hallonen . They mark the northern edge of the Lüneburg Heath and are of Ice Age origin. The groundwater levels are much lower there, at best one encounters strata water .

history

Maschen was first mentioned in a document in 1294 under the name “Merschene” (Low German: “End of the march”). Archaeological finds from the remains of houses indicate that the area was inhabited as early as the year 900.

The first school was built in 1671 and has changed location several times until today. Today the Maschen primary school is located in the center of the village next to the village house. The restored old school clock was installed in the tower of the village house.

On July 1, 1972, Maschen and 18 other communities were merged to form the new Seevetal community.

Today Maschen is characterized by a large number of shopping opportunities in three supermarkets, a beverage market and several smaller shops. The village house and a local library are also located in Maschen Dorf.

The main traffic routes in Maschen Heide are the Alter Postweg and Horster Landstrasse .

traffic

Maschen is a motorway and freight hub. The passenger station is outside the town, on the side of the freight station facing away from it. Regional trains on the route (Hamburg–) Harburg – Winsen – Lüneburg run every half hour to hourly. Since August 2015, there have been no more bus connections from the 248 and 343 lines at the station, which initially lead to Maschen-Dorf and then to Fleestedt (line 343) or via Maschen-Heide (248) to Holtorfsloh . The reason for this was the establishment of a single-lane traffic routing on the Decatur Bridge, which crosses the Maschen marshalling yard and is in need of renovation , named after the partner municipality of Seevetal in Illinois . At the meeting on September 30, 2016, the council of the Seevetal municipality decided by a large majority to close the Decatur Bridge to all public transport, although a special regulation was accepted for traffic to the Deutsche Bahn premises. To travel to Hamburg-Harburg, you can also use line 343 via Fleestedt (connection to line 14). There are also connections to the Hittfeld community center . All lines belong to the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund.

The mesh RBF Station is the largest marshalling yard in Europe and the second largest worldwide. The marshalling yard was opened on July 7, 1977.

Sports

Maschen has two sports clubs, one is VfL Maschen eV from 1911 and the other is ESV Maschen from 1980 e. V. VfL Maschen, with its badminton, ball sports, basketball, football, martial arts, coronary, swimming, dancing, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics and volleyball departments, is the larger of the two clubs. Fishing, tennis and football are offered in ESV Maschen. There is also a shooting club with a marching band in mesh.

Regular events

Maschen celebrates a village festival every summer. Furthermore, the traditional Christmas market takes place every year on the Saturday before Christmas. Also worth mentioning is the Easter bonfire that takes place annually on Holy Saturday at Schützenplatz, which is organized by the Maschen volunteer fire brigade, as well as the annual rifle festival in July.

Culture

The country band Truck Stop had a long history and recorded their records in Joe Menke's recording studio there between 1977 and 1995. She mentioned the place in her hit Der wilde, wilde Westen ( The wilde, wilde west starts right behind Hamburg, in a studio in Maschen… ). The band member Cisco Berndt lived in Maschen until the end.
