Cisco Berndt
Günter "Cisco" Berndt (born December 12, 1942 in Hamburg ; † December 30, 2014 in Maschen ) was a German musician . He was a founding member of the Truck Stop band .
Childhood and youth
Cisco Berndt, bourgeois Günter Berndt , was born on December 12, 1942 at Nicolaistraße 32 in Hamburg-St. Pauli was born not far from the Protestant St. Michaelis Church . He was later baptized in this church. For a while, he grew up in a "home for unsupervised children." When Cisco was about fourteen years old, the home manager gave him a few hours of guitar lessons. At the age of fifteen he lived in Hamburg-Hamm and began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer. After work he often went to the Horner Moor with his two-year-old friend Teddy Weißegger (Joachim Weißegger) , where he played the guitar, often in good company . When Teddy got a good offer, he asked Cisco if he wanted to take over his dance band. Cisco replied that he had to learn something first. Teddy showed him a lot on the guitar and Cisco began to learn to play the guitar more intensively after work.
Cisco and the Houserockers
After more than a year he also took guitar lessons from a guitar teacher named Addy Hauck, whom he paid from the apprenticeship salary and the earnings of the band appearances. In the meantime he had taken over the band The Houserockers . The band was taken over in July 1959. At first only dance music was played, but the reorientation towards rock 'n' roll quickly took place .
Cisco and his Dynamites
In 1961, Cisco Berndt founded the band Cisco and his Dynamites . Three months later, in 1962, Uwe ( Jimmy ) Beckedorf joined as drummer. They played rock 'n' roll and then twist . In order to stay in tune with the times , the band was renamed Cisco's Twistmen , but when the popularity of the twist faded very quickly after a short time, the band got their old name again. It was the time of beat music , which also had an impact on the band's music. The band became well known in northern Germany because the band performed in many cities. The most famous clubs in Hamburg where the band played were the Top Ten Club , the Kaiserkeller and the Star Club . The appearances in larger clubs in Hamburg began in spring 1962 in the Tanzpalast Club OK , the first Twist Club at the end of the Große Freiheit , in the former Stern-Kino , which was bought by Manfred Weissleder . On April 13, 1962, his Star Club was opened there. Soon after the were in other cities license stores Star Club opened the first and Star-Club were called, but the star of the course of a dispute Star Club in Star Palace have been renamed. These star palaces , in which the band performed, were in all of northern Germany, including in Buchholz in the Nordheide , Lüneburg , Kiel and Berlin .

The Ravers
In 1964, during his time with Ciscos and his Dynamites , Cisco Berndt met briefly with the group The Ravers to record an album with them, or two songs on the album, where he sang and played guitar. The album was released in 1965 with the title Beat Party with the Ravers . The Ravers was actually the band The Tonics , who made records under many names.
The Skyriders
From 1966 to April 1967 Cisco Berndt and Uwe ( Jimmy ) Beckedorf were in the band The Skyriders . Other band members at the time were Eobert Hormann and Josef ( Jupp ) Schwarz, who played the saxophone.
Gigi and the Night Shadows
In mid-1968 Cisco joined the band The Night Shadows , which was renamed Gigi and the Night Shadows , when Gigi , bourgeois Helga Weber , whom he already knew from Club OK , joined the band as a singer. Uwe ( Jimmy ) Beckedorf, who was a founding member of The Night Shadows , but left the band in an argument, was also back as a drummer. Former drummers of the band were Jimmy's brother Hartmut Beckedorf and Horst ( Hotte ) Kupczyk, who switched to the band The Blizzards in 1965 . Manager of Gigi and the Night Shadows was Thomas Glantz in Cisco's time, and other band members Jürgen Weber and Günther Timm. From 1968 to 1969 the band performed on board the ships Peter Pan and Nils Holgersson between Travemünde and Trelleborg . Cisco remained loyal to this band until the spring of 1972, but then his desire to only make country music won out and he left the band. The band members who joined later were the drummer H. ( Teddy ) Engel and the bass player Siggi Raskop. Gero Becker was also a former bass player in the group.
Released singles by Gigi and the Night Shadows (without Cisco Berndt):
- 1967: Hey, Hey, Sonny / Did you forget , Metronome Records
- 1976: Amanda (take your hand away from there) (by Peter Poll aka Berry Lipman and G. Rußmann aka Georg Rüßmann ) ( Ed.Cinevox ) / My grandma is a very modern woman (by Hans Jürgen Weber and Teddy Engel) (Ed . Joe Menke ), music producer: Frank Valdor , RCA Records
The song Amanda (take your hand away from there) by Gigi and the Night Shadows was also featured on compilations with various interpreters, including on the long-playing record Alaaf & Helau in 1976 by S * R International and in 1979 on the long-playing record, as well as the compact cassette Die große Gag - Parade from RCA Records .

Truck stop
As early as 1971, Cisco Berndt met with Lucius, bourgeois Burkhard Reichling and Erich Doll, the first members of what would later become the formation Truck Stop , to make country music. In 1972 the first official truck stop formation was founded with Claus-Dieter (also Klaus-Dieter ) Eckardt. A little later, two more musicians were added, Teddy, civil Wolfgang Ibing and Rainer Bach . At first the band was called Schröder goes Country , but was then renamed Truck Stop in 1972 , 1973 being the official date of foundation. CD Eckardt left the band in 1974, but stayed with the band as a lyricist. Forty, unofficially forty-one, Cisco stayed in the band and released over forty albums and several singles with it. The band's success was evidenced by several awards, including three gold tuning forks , as well as gold records and platinum records. At the end of 2013, Cisco decided to leave the band because, at the age of seventy-one, he was no longer physically able to cope with the mostly long and exhausting trips to the concerts and the concerts themselves. He also wanted to go back to where his love for country music began, while at the same time following his inner love for traditional country music. The last joint concert with Truck Stop took place on December 21, 2013 in the Congress Center Hamburg . Cisco was the only one at Truck-Stop who always wore cowboy clothes in his private life.
During his time at Truck Stop , Cisco was involved with Teddy Ibing from Truck Stop on the album Nach Hamburg by Hannes Wader , which was released in 1989.

Cisco
After leaving Truck Stop , Cisco worked on his first solo album, on which he recorded and sang fifteen of his favorite songs, including three pieces by Johnny Cash , who had been his greatest idol for decades. He was supported in this by his friend Nils Tuxen , who represented Rainer Bach at Truck Stop for six months in 1979 . Nils Tuxen played various instruments during the joint production, including a steel guitar and a five-string banjo . The album was produced and mixed in the Lick Lab Studio in Maschen. It was released in 2014 and is entitled I've done it all - Vol. 1 ( I've done everything before ).
After the release, he worked on his second solo album Everything is Fine ( Everything is fine ), because he died, but which he no longer ended at the age of seventy-two years. Contrary to many media reports that his daughter Andrea found him in his house in Maschen am Ginsterweg in the afternoon on December 31, 2014, sitting lifeless in the living room armchair and that an emergency doctor who was called up could only determine that he was dead, it was also reported that he was, instead of Daughter who found a friend. It is also alleged that this friend was his long-time friend from Los Angeles , which is not proven, but is conceivable, because only the boyfriend or daughter will have had another house key. For Raclette -Eat New Year's Eve at the former Beat Club presenter Uschi Nerke to which he was invited, he could not appear more.
His funeral service took place on January 23, 2015 in Hamburg's St. Michaelis Church . Pastor Julia Atze gave the address, accompanied by well-known Truck-Stop songs, played on an organ, just as after the address Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and Amazing Grace rang out on an organ. For decades, Cisco was not seen in public without a cowboy hat, and so one was enthroned on his coffin. Among the approximately two hundred and fifty mourning guests were his former band colleagues from Truck Stop , Knut Bewersdorff, Andreas Cisek, Teddy Ibing and Uwe Lost. Nils Tuxen, with whom he recorded the last album, was also present.
Contrary to a press release and his wish, he was not buried afterwards in the Maschener Heidefriedhof, where Joe Menke's grave is also located. His grave is said to be in a Hamburg cemetery or in the Hamburg area.
Cisco was married once but then lived apart. He had his first name officially changed to Cisco, including in his identity card.
Shooting and equestrian sports
Cisco Berndt also did shooting and equestrian sports. He was a member of the Schützenkorps Stelle und Umgebung eV and remained loyal to the pistol department of the club for almost thirty years until his death. In March 2001 he became Hamburg national champion in Hamburg and the surrounding area in the pistol and revolver category . His riding instructor was Thomas Hoppe, who founded the first western riding school in Hamburg in 1978 . Cisco had been an honorary member of the First Western Equestrian Union , or EMU for short , since March 1981 . Cisco owned two horses of its own for a while. The last one was a palomino .
