The Große Freiheit is a side street to the Reeperbahn / Nobistor , starting at Beatles-Platz , which is now part of the Hamburg-St. Pauli belongs. The road was laid out in Altona in 1610 .

history

Former rectory of the Altona Mennonites from the 18th century

The Große Freiheit, like the neighboring Kleine Freiheit , has had its official name since the 17th century from the freedom of religion and trade enjoyed by the non- guild craftsmen and religious communities in the city of Altona. It goes back to a privilege issued by Count Ernst von Schauenburg in 1601 to the Mennonite trader François Noë and others, which allowed them to set up a special economic zone in Altona that eventually became known as the freedom . The Catholic St. Joseph Church with its representative baroque facade (rebuilt in 1721) and the listed building ensemble Große Freiheit 73 (built 1850) and 75 (built 1772) as former parish houses of the Altona Mennonites . The Große Freiheit 75 housed the former pastorate, the Große Freiheit 73 in its original form consisted of two side wings, which marked the entrance to the former Mennonite church that was bombed in 1943/44 and was only connected later. The foundations and building remains of the destroyed church are believed to be between the building and a neighboring school building. In the 18th century, the Dompelaar Church was located near the Altonaer Reichenstrasse and the (now canalised) Pepermölenbek . In the neighboring Kleine Freiheit there was a French and a German-Dutch Reformed Church .

With the Greater Hamburg Law , Altona - and thus also the Große Freiheit - was incorporated into Hamburg, although the district boundaries were changed in line with the boundaries of the NSDAP party districts. Therefore, the street has belonged to the St. Pauli district since then.

There is only one hotel on the street, the St. Joseph Hotel Hamburg , which opened in 2005 and was named after the St. Joseph church of the same name.

It owes its fame to the nightclubs that used to exist there, such as Salambo , Safari, Colibri, Regina and others, which were distinguished by the fact that they not only offered striptease , but also performed sex, sometimes in costumes, on stage. All of these clubs are now closed.

Nowadays the street offers some well-known music clubs and discos such as Große Freiheit 36 , Kaiserkeller and Gruenspan and is a particularly heavily frequented part of the Reeperbahn's nightlife. The Indra Music Club can be found in Grosse Freiheit 64 to this day, where the Beatles made their first appearances before becoming more famous through their concerts in the Star Club .

The German drag queen Olivia Jones has opened various bars in the street: the Olivia Jones Bar , Olivias Show Club and Olivias Wilde Jungs .
