Pepermölenbek

The then still open Pepermölenbek as a border stream between Altona and Hamburg in a copper engraving from 1770. The Bachstraße is also indicated, which has now taken the name Pepermölenbek.

The or the Pepermölenbek (Low German for "Pfeffermühlenbach", also written Pepermöhlenbek, Pepermöhlenbeek or Pepermölenbeck) is a right tributary of the Elbe in Hamburg . Until the 17th century the brook was known as Altenau or Altenaue ; It is said to have received the name Pepermölenbek after a pepper mill located by the brook, the existence of which, however, is just as little proven as that of a powder mill that was built on the edge of the urban development for safety reasons .

The now mostly dry fallen or drained and cased Bach was for several centuries the border creek between the then independent Altona and the suburb of Hamburg Mountain (now St. Pauli) and at the same time between the Danish state as a whole belonging Duchy of Holstein and Hamburg . In 1246 , Heilwig von der Lippe founded a Cistercian monastery where the brook flowed into the Elbe at the fish market . The place was called Herwardeshude and included a mill, a courtyard and possibly a few other buildings. In 1295 the monastery was moved to the Alster, and the mill and farm burned down in 1308 after being struck by lightning. In 1708 the Mennonite Dompelaars established a church in Große Freiheit near Pepermölenbek.

Even today, the name of the street running in the old, relatively narrow and steep valley from Nobistor to Fischmarkt is reminiscent of the water; it was called Bachstraße until 1948 , then Pepermölenbek .
