Heilwig von der Lippe

Heilwig zur Lippe (* around 1200; † between 1248 and 1250), also Heilwig von der Lippe or Heilwig von Schaumburg , was a German Cistercian nun and founder of the Herwardeshude monastery .

She was the daughter of Hermann II. Von der Lippe and Oda von Tecklenburg and married to Count Adolf IV. Von Schauenburg and Holstein-Kiel . Johann I Graf von Holstein-Kiel was their eldest son, Gerhard I the second son, and Mechthild von Holstein their daughter.

Life

On February 24, 1246, she founded a Cistercian convent in Herwardeshude, a spot at the confluence of the Pepermölenbek with the Elbe , between what would later become Hamburg-St. Pauli and Altona . In 1247 the monastery was confirmed by Pope Innocent IV .

The later monastery In Valle Virginum (Hervardeshude Monastery) on Harvestehuder Weg and, after the Reformation in 1530, the St. Johannis Monastery , which still exists today as the Evangelical Ladies Monastery of St. Johannis , emerged from the founding .

aftermath

Heilwigstrasse in Hamburg-Eppendorf and Harvestehude has been named after her since 1870 .
