Silke Urbanski

Silke Urbanski (born February 5, 1964 in Hamburg ) is a historian, author and former politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).

Life and work

Urbanski attended school from 1970 to 1983. She then studied history , philosophy and education at the University of Hamburg .

1986/87 she worked as a teacher in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames . From 1989 to 1991 and from 1992 to 1995 she was a research assistant and from 1995 to 1997 trainee teacher and lecturer at the University of Hamburg. She obtained her doctorate in 1996 phil. about the history of the Harvestehude monastery . Since 1997 she has worked as a teacher at the Max-Brauer-Gesamtschule Hamburg-Altona and further as a lecturer at the History Department of the University of Hamburg . In 2008 she became a teacher at the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium in Hamburg . She also published the historical biography of the late medieval hospital founder Geseke Cletzen and historical novels. Her knowledge of the Middle Ages flow into the stories, which always have their starting point in historical events.

Urbanski also published handouts for history lessons and was the editor of two scientific commemorative publications for her university teacher Gerhard Theuerkauf .

Since August 2014 she has been working on the "Hamburg History Book" project, a reading, information and teaching book on Hamburg history, supported by the Hamburg History Office, the Association for Hamburg History and the Hamburg Authority for Schools and Vocational Training. She developed and initiated this project, put together the team of authors and designed many of the worksheets to be found there. The website was presented to the public on September 6, 2017. Urbanski continues to work on the website together with historians from the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg History Center and the Research Center for Contemporary History.

Urbanski joined the SPD in 1986 and was a deputy in the cultural authority from 1993 to 1997 . She was a member of the Hamburg parliament in the 16th electoral term from 1997 to 2001. There she sat for her parliamentary group in the committee for science and research, in the committee for equality of women and in the culture committee. In 2005 she gave up her teaching position at the University of Hamburg in protest against the tuition fees that had been introduced at all universities in Hamburg from 2007 .
