Fritz Willy Fischer , actually Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Christoph Fischer Edler von Güllern , (born September 21, 1903 in Salzburg ; † February 12, 1963 there ) was an Austrian painter , journalist , writer and antique dealer .

Life

“The Mask of Gla” was the inspiration and title donor for Fischer's novel

Fritz Willy Fischer was trained as a painter primarily by his adoptive father Adolph Johannes Fischer and then for two or three semesters at the Vienna School of Applied Arts . At the beginning of the 1930s Fritz Wilhelm Fischer has numerous portraits drawn of which above all of that - of the living from 1918 to 1931 in Salzburg - writer Andreas Latzko was described by his contemporaries as a special "gem". In the interwar period, he reportedly wrote exhibition reviews for the socialist daily "Salzburger Wacht". At the end of 1940 he was called up for military service, from where he returned to Salzburg at the end of 1945.

In 1946 he published the detective novel “The Mask of Gla” in the “Salzburger Festungsverlag” (the forerunner of the Residenz Verlag ), of which a Spanish translation was published in 1948 under the title “La máscara de Gla”.

Fritz Willy Fischer owes the renewed attention to his life and work to the artistic connection with the Irish writer James Joyce , whom he met in the summer of 1928 in Salzburg and whom he subsequently portrayed in a lithograph . In connection with his Salzburg exhibition, Fritz Willy Fischer wrote to James Joyce in mid-October 1932 asking him to sign the portrait lithograph mentioned , which according to the accompanying letter is intended to be the main showpiece of the exhibition. Despite numerous researches, it is currently unclear whether Joyce complied with Fischer's request and returned the signed lithograph, whether it disappeared in the post, is still undetected in a Joyce archive or even that Joyce lithograph that has been in the Salzburg's possession since 1950 Museum and attributed to Adolph Johannes Fischer because of her signature.
