The Residenz Verlag is a publisher of literature and nonfiction based in Salzburg and Vienna .

history

Foundation and focus

The Residenz Verlag was founded in 1956 by Wolfgang Schaffler in Salzburg and emerged from the Festungsverlag . In the first few years the focus was on regional and non-fiction books, from the 1960s onwards, young Austrian authors and later also German and Swiss writers were accepted.

The exact origin of the name “Residenz Verlag” is not proven. According to hearsay, the name was chosen based on the Salzburg residence . Since in the 1950s mainly regionalia were published by Residenz Verlag , the choice of a name with local ties seems obvious. The “Festungsverlag”, from which the Residenz Verlag emerged , also got its name from the Hohensalzburg Fortress , the landmark of the city of Salzburg.

Change of ownership and management

In 1983, Wolfgang Schaffler decided to sell the Residenz Verlag to the Austrian Federal Publishing House (ÖBV) . In 1984 Jochen Jung , who had worked for the publishing house as an editor since 1975, was appointed second managing director.

In 2002 the Bundesverlag was privatized and sold to the German Ernst Klett Verlag . During this time Martina Schmidt was responsible for the publishing house. In December 2003 the Lower Austrian Press House became the new owner and Herwig Bitsche took over the management of the publishing house. With this takeover, the publishing house temporarily moved to St. Pölten .

The publishing house of the Lower Austrian Press House , NP Buchverlag , was given up as its own brand in 2006. Since then, all books by the two publishers have been published under the name Residenz Verlag . At the end of 2010 the publisher closed its original branch in Salzburg.

today

The publishers Claudia Romeder (program) and Roswitha Wonka (commercial) have been running Residenz Verlag since 2010 . In 2015 the PDP Holding, behind which Peter Daniell Porsche is, became the new owner. As a result, the headquarters of the publishing house was relocated back to Salzburg - to the "Kunstmühle" in Salzburg-Gnigl - and another location in Vienna .
