Barbara Frischmuth
Barbara Frischmuth (born July 5, 1941 in Altaussee , Salzkammergut ) is an Austrian writer and translator .
Life
Barbara Frischmuth was born in Altaussee as the daughter of the hotelier Anton Frischmuth, who died in Russia during World War II in 1943 , and his wife Maria, née Maria. Schmidt born. After his father's death, his widow continued to run the hotel until 1956, when he married again.
Barbara spent her childhood in Altaussee, attended grammar schools in Gmunden and Bad Aussee and later because of a move the Pestalozzi grammar school in Graz , where she also graduated. At the Karl-Franzens University studied Frischmuth from autumn 1959 on interpreting Institute Turkish , English , and later Hungarian . In 1960/61 she was on a scholarship at the Ataturk University in Erzurum . In 1964, Frischmuth moved to Vienna , where she began studying Turkish , Iranian and Islamic studies .
In the fall of 1966, she broke off her studies and became a full-time writer and translator. Already during her student days she published poems and in 1962 became a member of what later became known as the “ Graz Group ”. She took part in readings and came into contact with Forum Stadtpark , of which she was appointed a founding member during her time in Erzurum. Several stays abroad took her to Turkey, Hungary, Egypt, England, China, Japan and the USA, where she lectured at Oberlin College in Ohio and at Washington University in St. Louis .
Today the author lives in Altaussee. There is also her garden, which provides the material for her three garden story books so far. She works as a writer, translator and columnist. Barbara Frischmuth is also the niece of Edith Hauer-Frischmuth , whose life story she incorporated into her work Einander Kind , with whom she, however, had a family relationship.
