Salzburg State Theater
The Salzburg State Theater is located on Makartplatz in the old town to the right of the Salzach in the state capital of Salzburg . The theater is under monument protection ( list entry ) and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Center of the City of Salzburg .
The Landestheater has its own ensemble for drama, ballet and musical theater (opera, operetta, musical). The house's repertoire consists of contemporary and classical works with 400 performances per season. A total of 340 people from 35 different countries work at the Salzburg State Theater.
The building with 707 seats is also used by the Salzburg Festival for drama performances in summer .
history
In 1775, Prince Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo , despite bitter resistance from Salzburg Mayor Weiser , had the Ballhaus on Hannibalplatz (today Makartplatz ) built by Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron in 1625 for the purpose of the popular ball games and built a Prince Archbishop's Court Theater . At that time it was located directly on the Salzach river promenade. It was opened with The Favor of the Prince by Christian Heinrich Schmid . The box theater soon proved to be too small and was rebuilt in 1788.
From 1803 the house was called the Electoral Theater, from 1808 the kk National Theater . In 1809 Salzburg came under French administration for a short time and became a Bavarian province in 1810, the theater was then called the Royal National Theater . From 1827 to 1882 the theater was combined with the Ischl summer stage. In 1892 the old theater came into the possession of the city council and was demolished due to safety deficiencies.
The Viennese office Fellner & Helmer built a new house in the neo-baroque style from 1892 to 1893, which was opened after the laying of the keystone on the evening of October 1, 1893, as the new city theater in the presence of Archduke Ludwig Viktor . At the opening, the overture to Mozart's opera La clemenza di Tito was played, followed by a prologue by Josef Kollmenn and Ludwig Fulda's play “The Talisman”. In 1924 the house was renovated, from 1938 to 1939 by Josef Holzinger and Paul Geppert the Elder. J. rebuilt. On August 7, 1939, the stage was reopened ( as part of the Salzburg Festival) with Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio (conductor: Karl Böhm ). Since 1940 the theater has been called the Landestheater . In 2003 and 2004 the theater was extensively renovated.
Since 2010, the Salzburg State Theater has had a close cooperation with the Salzburg Marionette Theater . In addition to joint new productions ( The Little Prince , The Ring of the Nibelung ), the ensemble of the Landestheater plays in its own new productions in the hall of the puppet theater called Stage 24 in the winter months. The rehearsal center in Aigen, which opened in autumn 2017, is also used as a performance location. It was designed by the architecture workshop Zopf, Salzburg. In addition, the Great Festival Hall and the House for Mozart in the festival district are permanent venues of the Salzburg State Theater.
Under the management of Lutz Hochstraate from 1986 to 2004, the Dreispartenhaus was able to distinguish itself significantly in all areas, and an integrated children's and youth theater was added. From 2004 to 2009 Peter Dolder was in charge of the Salzburger Landestheater and set his own accents, especially in maintaining the Thomas Bernhard repertoire, but also by inventing the theater's own ball. Since the 2009/2010 season, Dr. Carl Philip von Maldeghem took over the theater and with his team was able to increase the number of new productions and the number of visitors significantly within two years. The pulsating four-branch house with a strong profile presents a top-class program, the charisma of which is perceived as defining not only in the city and state of Salzburg, but also beyond its borders.
