Salzburg Marionette Theater
The Salzburg Marionette Theater has existed since 1913 in the city of Salzburg , on which operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are preferably performed.
history
The year 1913 is considered to be the founding year of Salzburg marionettes, when Anton Aicher , a Styrian-born sculptor, put his passion as a figure carver and lover of puppet theater into practice and presented his idea of the world of marionettes to the Salzburgers with Mozart's “ Bastien and Bastienne ” . The success was so overwhelming that from then on the marionettes got their permanent place in Salzburg. After Anton Aichner's death, the theater was artistically directed by his son Hermann until his death in 1977 and then by his daughter Gretl Aicher (1928–2012).
program
The Salzburg Marionette Theater is a kind of small opera house . The listed works are staged like real operas : a stage designer designs the stage setting, a director stages the stage and a choreographer develops the dance part. The music, by renowned orchestras and soloists, comes from a phonogram. This gives the audience the illusion of an opera performance. The program is aimed primarily at adult music theater enthusiasts , especially Mozart's works. “ The Magic Flute ”, “ Don Giovanni ”, “ The Marriage of Figaro ” and “ The Abduction from the Seraglio ” are prominently represented in the repertoire. In addition to the Mozart operas, there are also performances of works by other composers, such as Rossini's “ The Barber of Seville ”, Offenbach's “ Hoffmanns Erzählungen ” or “ Die Fledermaus ” by Johann Strauss. Prokofiev's “ Peter and the Wolf ” and Humperdinck's “ Hansel and Gretel ” were staged for children . The program also includes the “ Nutcracker Suite ”, “ A Midsummer Night's Dream ” (the only spoken piece) and the musical “ The Sound of Music ”, which is especially intended for Salzburg tourists .
There was a cooperation with the Salzburg Festival in 2006, when the puppet theater contributed two pieces to the festival program with “Bastien and Bastienne” and “ Der Schauspieldirektor ”.
The puppet theater ensemble also goes on tour and gives guest performances in several countries around the world. The performance practice of the Salzburg Marionette Theater has been part of Austria's intangible cultural heritage since 2016 .
Location
The Salzburg Marionette Theater, which was moved into in 1971, is a baroque- style theater with 350 seats . It is on the right side of the old town between the Salzburg State Theater and the Mozarteum . The building was previously, among other things, the “Hotel Mirabell” in which the writer James Joyce stayed during his five-week stay in Salzburg in the summer of 1928.
