Gerhard Schedl
Gerhard Schedl (born August 5, 1957 in Vienna ; † November 30, 2000 in Eppstein ) was an Austrian composer.
Life
Gerhard Schedl initially studied violin and guitar from 1967, played in various bands before turning to composition (relatively late) in 1972. Between 1976 and 1980 he studied musicology at the University of Vienna without completing a degree, and at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (at that time still the University of Music and Performing Arts ) composition with Erich Urbanner , composition and counterpoint as well as im Minor in conducting with Otmar Suitner . He completed this training path in 1980 with a diploma “with distinction”.
In 1980 Schedl came out with a total of three works, including the children's opera The Swineherd based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen , for which he received 2nd prize at the Carl Maria von Weber Competition of the city of Dresden. In 1982 he received the second price for the chamber opera II. Double bass there .
From 1981 he held a teaching position at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main , and from 1982 also at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . From 1987 to 2000 he led the Frankfurt Courses for New Music together with Claus Kühnl .
Schedl created three commissioned works for the Salzburg State Theater . This made him one of Austria's most important composers of music theater works in the 1990s.
Due to depression, Gerhard Schedl committed suicide at the age of 43. He rests in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 40, number 97).

The last students of Gerhard Schedl were Daniel Hensel and Roman Pawollek. Hensel wrote the first dissertation on Schedl's work. Together with the musicologist Christian Heindl, both are committed to the performances of Schedl's music, which resulted in a cooperation between the Viennese association for contemporary music il rilievo and the Alte Schmiede (Vienna) as well as the Studio for New Music Würzburg eV.
Gerhard Schedl Music Theater Prize
In recognition of Gerhard Schedl's achievements, the Neue Oper Wien awarded the Gerhard Schedl Music Theater Prize for the first time in 2009 for a full-length stage work.
