The Alte Schmiede is a place for artistic events in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City , which is known primarily for literature events and small-scale concerts . The supporting organization is the Kunstverein Wien.

Venue

The Kunstverein Wien operates the literary quarter , the music workshop and the gallery of literary magazines on Schönlaterngasse . In addition to the bimonthly program folder, the newspaper Der Hammer appears as a supplement to the Viennese street newspaper Augustin .

As part of the Kunstverein Wien , which was set up in 1969 on the initiative of the City of Vienna's Department of Culture - where Reinhard Urbach headed the literary department - Urbach founded the Alte Schmiede in 1975 together with Rudolf Pritz and Kurt Piak as a venue for readings, exhibitions and concerts. The name refers to the historic blacksmith's workshop, which was set up in the house at Schönlaterngasse 9 in 1880 and has been open to the public again as a second event room in 2007 since its adaptation. The central event room of the Alte Schmiede has been located in the cellar vault of the house since autumn 2010. Between 1975 and 1995 the Alte Schmiede held around 3000 events. The works of contemporary writers and artists were presented to the public through hundreds of events. The literary quarter also became a communication hub for Austrian authors, where events such as the Graz authors' meeting take place.

The Alte Schmiede is funded by the cultural department of the City of Vienna. In addition to the activities in Schönlaterngasse, there are collaborations with other cultural institutions and literature festivals such as Literatur im Herbst . Walter Famler is the general secretary of the Kunstverein. Kurt Neumann and Daniel Terkl run the literary quarter, Karlheinz Roschitz , Volkmar Klien and Alejandro del Valle-Lattanzio are the program curators of the music workshop .

The Alte Schmiede is a member of HALMA , the European network of literary centers.

Literary quarter

In the years 1992 to 1995, the event location in the backyard of the Alte Schmiede, which was used until 2010, was rebuilt according to plans by architect Franz E. Kneissl and employees Melanie Danner and Tanja Kullack. The entrance was transparent through full glazing to the main room. The main room itself was characterized by minimalist seating steps.
