Herbert Zeman
Herbert Zeman (born June 4, 1940 in Pernitz ) is an Austrian literary scholar . Zeman was director of the Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna and is President of the Austrian Goethe Society .
life and work
After studying German and English at the University of Vienna and vocal studies in Vienna (1958–1966), Zeman was awarded a doctorate in 1966. phil. PhD. From 1965 to 1972 he was a research assistant at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna. In 1972 he completed his habilitation and was appointed university lecturer. In 1973 he took up a visiting professorship for modern German literature at the University of Erlangen . In 1973/74 he spent the winter semester as a substitute for the full professorship for “Comparative Literature with Special Consideration of German Literature” at the University of Bonn . In the winter semester 1974/75 he worked again as a visiting professor at the University of Erlangen. In 1975 he was appointed associate professor. University professor at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna. In 1976 he was appointed full public professor for modern German literature with a special focus on Austrian literature at the University of Vienna. In 1977 he was a visiting professor at Ain-Schams University in Cairo and was visiting professor at Stanford University in California, USA for 1978/79 . At the same time he also worked as a visiting professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna . In 1985/86 he was Max Kade Visiting Professor at the University of Ann Arbor in Michigan in the winter semester . In 1990/91 he went to the University of Rome (La Sapienza) as a visiting professor and in 1992/93 to the National University of Córdoba (Argentina). 1980 to 1996 he was also a visiting professor for Austrian literature at the Center Universitaire in Luxembourg . In 2008 he retired from the University of Vienna. From 2008 to 2015 Zeman had a teaching position at the philosophical-theological college Benedict XVI. in Heiligenkreuz Abbey .
Zeman is regarded as the founder of literary song and libretto research and - especially following August Sauer - as a innovator in Austrian literary research. He is the editor of several literary series.
Zeman was in second marriage with the Vienna State Opera - soprano Ildikó Raimondi married. He has two children.
