The University of La Sapienza ( Italian sapienza ' wisdom ' ; Latin Studium Urbis ), officially Sapienza - Università di Roma , also called University of Rome I , is one of the largest universities in Europe and the oldest in the city of Rome .

history

The Sapienza was originally a papal university . On April 20, 1303, Pope Boniface VIII officially founded the Studium urbis with the papal bull In suprema praeminentia dignitatis in order to train candidates for the priesthood in the vicinity of the Holy See .

The first rooms were in the area around the Basilica di Sant'Eustachio . In the second half of the 16th century, the Palazzo della Sapienza was built there for the University , where the later Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina was also housed.

The Sapienza has been state-owned since 1870 . In 1935 she moved to the monumental Città Universitaria designed by Marcello Piacentini near Roma Termini train station , where the headquarters are still located today. In recent decades, branch offices have been set up in Civitavecchia , Latina , Pomezia and Rieti (all in the Lazio region ) and in Buenos Aires .

Faculties

Sapienza has eleven faculties and offers 281 different Bachelor and Master courses . The Sapienza includes 54 libraries with around 3.7 million volumes, 18 museums and a further 130 departments and institutes.

In 2011, the university founded the Sapienza School for Advanced Studies to promote particularly talented students .
