Magdi Allam

Magdi Cristiano Allam ( Arabic مجدي علام, DMG Maǧdī ʿAllām ; * April 22, 1952 in Cairo ) is an Italian journalist and author of Egyptian origin who drew attention to himself through his articles and books on the relationship between the Western and the Islamic world .

Life

As a child, Allam attended an Egyptian boarding school at the request of his deeply religious Muslim mother , where he increasingly dealt with Western culture and civilization. As an adult, he decided to emigrate to Italy. "I have to go, Egypt is a big prison and I'm looking for freedom," he wrote in one of his books.

Allam graduated from La Sapienza University in Rome with a degree in sociology . After having worked for numerous Italian newspapers - including the daily La Repubblica - he switched to the largest and oldest Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera , for which he wrote comments, among other things.

In his work "Vincere la paura" (Conquering Fear) Magdi Allam reports on the time when he had to be guarded by armed security forces because he had received death threats from the radical Islamic Hamas because of his sharp criticism of Palestinian suicide bombers .

In 2006 Allam, who is known for his critical stance towards Islam in Italy , received the Dan David Prize for his journalistic commitment to understanding and tolerance between cultures.

Allam is married to a Catholic. The couple have a younger son and two grown children from a previous marriage. In the Easter vigil of 2008 he let Pope Benedict XVI. baptized and changed his name to Magdi Cristiano Allam. Yusuf al-Qaradawi declared the fact that this was done publicly and in front of the cameras as a hostile act against Islam. On March 25, 2013, Magdi Allam announced his exit from the Catholic Church in an open letter . He wrote that he remained a Christian, but that the Church was too weak in relation to Islam: "È una autentica follia suicida il fatto che Giovanni Paolo II si spinse fino a baciare il Corano il 14 maggio 1999." (Eng. "It is an authentic suicidal madness that John Paul II went so far as to kiss the Koran on May 14, 1999.").

politics

On November 30th, 2008 Magdi Allam founded the party Io amo l'Italia (“I love Italy”).

Allam was in the European elections on 7 June 2009 on the list of the Christian Democratic UDC to the European Parliament voted. He was vice-chairman of the Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group and a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and of the Delegation for relations with Israel . In 2010 he ended his cooperation with the Christian Democrats in protest against their cooperation with the Islamic conservative Turkish AKP within the framework of the European People's Party .

In 2013 he took part in the political initiative “Workshop for Italy” ( Officina per l'Italia ), which in March 2014 participated in the Fratelli d'Italia - Alleanza Nazionale party . Allam ran for Fratelli d'Italia in the 2014 European elections . However, the party was only able to achieve 3.7 percent and thus no parliamentary seat.
