Alessandro Barnabò (born March 2, 1801 in Foligno , † February 24, 1874 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . From 1856 until his death he headed the De Propaganda Fide congregation .

Life

Barnabò came from an Italian noble family. He studied in Foligno, Camerino and at La Sapienza University in Rome. In 1831 he became coadjutor canon at the Vatican Basilica and later ajutante di studio of the later Cardinal Paolo Polidori , secretary of the Council Congregation .

In March 1833 he was ordained a priest . On January 6, 1836, Barnabò was canon at the Vatican Basilica. In 1838 Pope Gregory XVI appointed him . as consultor of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide . In 1843 he awarded him the title of papal house prelate. In the following years Barnabò held numerous other offices before he became secretary of the congregation De Propaganda Fide on August 13, 1848 .

Pope Pius IX accepted him in the consistory of June 16, 1856 as cardinal priest of Santa Susanna in the college of cardinals . Four days later he became cardinal prefect of the Congregation for Propaganda. In the same year he also became protector of the Pontifical North American College. In 1858 he organized a meeting between Pius IX. and Isaac Thomas Hecker , the founder of the Paulists . From 1868 to 1869 he was also treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals. Cardinal Barnabò participated in the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870 . He died in 1874, shortly before his 73rd birthday.
