Paolo Polidori (* 4. January 1778 in Jesi , Papal States ; † 23. April 1847 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal .

Life

Paolo Polidori studied in the seminary of Perugia and was ordained a priest in 1800 . In 1803 he became vicar general of the diocese of Viterbo , which he remained until 1806. Afterwards Polidori was assistant to the later Cardinal Dean Leonardo Antonelli and his vicar general in the suburbicarian diocese of Ostia-Velletri . When the French occupied Rome, the young priest was captured and taken to Milan . Paolo Polidori was only able to return in 1814. The new cardinal dean Alessandro Mattei appointed him its administrator . In the 1820s he was secretary of various congregations, including the Council Congregation . Polidori also acted as secretary in the conclaves of 1829 and 1830–1831 .

Under Pope Gregory XVI. Polidori was initially pro-secretary for internal church affairs before he was accepted by the Pope on June 23, 1834 as Cardinal Priest of Sant'Eusebio in the College of Cardinals . In 1839 he opted for the titular church of Santa Prassede and in 1841 became Prefect of the Council Congregation . He received the episcopal ordination on February 11, 1844 by the Pope himself, after he had been appointed titular Archbishop of Tarsus by him; Co-consecrators were Cardinal Costantino Patrizi Naro , Vicar General of His Holiness for the City of Rome, and Cardinal Gabriele Ferretti , Prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics . After the death of Gregory XVI. Cardinal Polidori was one of the participants in the conclave of 1846 , the Pius IX. elected to succeed. In this conclave he led the moderate wing of the college of cardinals.

Paolo Polidori died in 1847. He was buried in the Church of San Ignazio , as he had ordered in his will.
