Cardinal Vincenzo Macchi (around 1840)

Vincenzo Macchi (born August 30, 1770 in Capodimonte , † September 30, 1860 in Rome ) was a papal diplomat and curia cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Vincenzo Macchi studied from 1791 at the University of La Sapienza in Rome and was ordained a priest on September 20, 1794 . In December 1801 he became a doctor of both rights . Macchi was active at the papal nunciature in Portugal from 1803 and became intern there in 1808 , which he remained until 1816.

Pope Pius VII appointed him titular archbishop of Nisibis on October 2, 1818 and appointed him four days later as apostolic nuncio in Switzerland . The episcopal ordination donated him on October 4, 1818 Lorenzo Cardinal Litta . On November 22, 1819, he was appointed nuncio in France . Macchi reached Paris in December of the same year and stayed there until the beginning of 1827. Due to the ultramontanism that emerged under Charles X (King 1824–1830) , Macchi had no political difficulties with the French royal family.

On October 2, 1826 he was by Pope Leo XII. appointed cardinal with the rank of cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Giovanni e Paolo . In June 1828 he became apostolic legate in the province of Ravenna. He was a candidate for the conclave of 1830/1831 but received insufficient support, despite the backing of Giuseppe Albani .

Under Pope Gregory XVI. he was Prefect of the Council Congregation between 1834 and 1840 . In 1840 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina , in 1844 Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina and also Secretary of the Holy Office and finally in 1847 Cardinal Bishop of Ostia , where he was Dean of the Holy College until his death . He died in Rome at the age of 90 after recovering from a serious illness in 1855 and was buried in the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
