Castruccio Castracane degli Antelminelli , also Gaetano Castruccio Castracane degli Antelminelli , (born September 21, 1779 in Urbino , † February 22, 1852 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
He came from a long-standing noble family from Lucca and was the son of Giuseppe Castracane degli Antelminelli and his wife, the Marchesa Gentilina Honorati. Other cardinals from his relatives were Giovanni Battista Castrucci and Bernardino Honorati . His brother Innocenzo Castracane degli Antelminelli became bishop of Cervia in 1834 and of Cesena in 1838 .
Castruccio Castracane degli Antelminelli was educated at the Collegio dei Nobili in Urbino and at the Collegio Romano in Rome before he was trained as a diplomat at the Pontifical Academy for the Ecclesiastical Nobility from 1803 to 1807 . After that he worked from 1816 in the cathedral construction works of St. Peter and from 1825 as economic secretary. In 1828 he became secretary of the Congregation Propaganda Fide .
Pope Gregory XVI created him in the consistory of April 15, 1833 as cardinal priest , he received the cardinal's hat three days later, and on July 29 of the same year the Pope gave him San Pietro in Vincoli as the titular church . On December 11, 1834, he became Prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics . On November 12, 1839, he finally became a cardinal major penitentiary , which he remained until his death.
On June 22, 1844, he was raised to Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina . He was ordained bishop on February 11th of the same year by Pope Gregory XVI. himself, co-consecrators were the cardinals Costantino Patrizi Naro , cardinal vicar for the city of Rome, and Gabriele Ferretti , prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics. From January 19, 1846 to 1847, Castruccio Castracane degli Antelminelli was chamberlain of the Holy Cardinals College . He took part in the conclave of 1846, from which Pius IX. emerged as Pope. When the Pope was in exile in Gaeta from November 1848 to July 1849, he became president of an administrative commission, after which he was again secretary of the Propaganda Fide .
Castruccio Castracane degli Antelminelli died in Rome and, according to his will, was buried in San Pietro in Vincoli in the tomb that Pope Julius II had built for himself in that church. On the opposite wall is his epitaph.
