Luigi Amat di San Filippo e Sorso
Luigi Amat di San Filippo e Sorso (born June 20, 1796 in Sinnai , Sardinia , † March 30, 1878 in Rome ) was papal diplomat and curia cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
He studied from 1815 to 1818 at the University of Cagliari (Sardinia) jurisprudence and became the Dr. jur. PhD . He then studied at the Pontifical Academy for the Ecclesiastical Aristocracy and the Roman University of La Sapienza and received his doctorate in 1826 as Doctor iuris utriusque . On December 24, 1826, Luigi Amat di San Filippo e Sorso received the sacrament of ordination . On April 9, 1827, he was appointed titular archbishop of Nicaea . He received his episcopal ordination on April 22, 1827 in Rome by Cardinal Giuseppe Spina ; Co- consecrators were Pietro Caprano , secretary of the Congregation for Propaganda Fide and secretary of the Congregation for Bishops , and Luigi Bottiglia Savoulx , dean of the Apostolic Chamber . The appointment as nuncio in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies followed on April 24 of the same year. From November 13, 1832 he was nuncio in Spain .
Pope Gregory XVI took him on May 15, 1837 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and awarded him on October 2 of the same year the titular church of Santa Maria in Via . Luigi Amat di San Filippo e Sorso was the papal legate in Ravenna and Bologna and was elevated to Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina on March 15, 1852 . From September 27, 1852 he also took over the titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso in Commendam . Pope Pius IX appointed him on September 21, 1867 archpriest of the Lateran Basilica . On October 8, 1870, he moved to the suburbicarian diocese of Porto e Santa Rufina . Luigi Amat di San Filippo e Sorso was a council father at the First Vatican Council . On March 12, 1877, he became Dean of the College of Cardinals and Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and Velletri .
He died in Rome in 1878 and was initially buried in the Campo Verano Roman cemetery . Later his bones were transferred to his titular church San Lorenzo in Damaso and buried there.
