Giuseppe Spina
Giuseppe Cardinal Spina (born March 11, 1756 in Sarzana , Italy , † November 13, 1828 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Giuseppe Spina studied Catholic theology and law in Pisa . He received his doctorate in both canon law and civil law in 1780 and then worked for several years as a lawyer. On November 13, 1796 he received the sacrament of ordination and was papal house prelate . He performed various duties in the Prefecture of the Apostolic Palace and at the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature . Spina accompanied Pope Pius VI. to France , who on June 10, 1798 appointed him titular archbishop of Corinth . The episcopal ordination received Spina on October 21, 1789 Florence in the presence of the Pope by Francisco Antonio de Lorenzana y Butrón , the Archbishop of Toledo ; Co- consecrators were Antonio Maria Odescalchi , Nuncio in Tuscany, and Fabrizio Salvi , Bishop of Grosseto . Spina donated to Pope Pius VI. shortly before his death the sacraments of death .
Pope Pius VII created Spina in the consistory of February 23, 1801 as cardinal in pectore . The public announcement took place in the consistory of March 29, 1802. He was assigned as titular church Sant'Agnese fuori le mura . On March 24, 1802, Giuseppe Cardinal Spina was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Genoa , which he headed until December 13, 1816. On February 21, 1820 he was raised to cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina . In the following years he represented the Holy See as papal legate on several occasions, so in 1822 at the Congress in Ljubljana and in 1823 at the Congress in Verona . Spina took part in the conclave of 1823 and was elected a year later by Pope Leo XII. Appointed Prefect of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature . Giuseppe Cardinal Spina died in Rome on November 13, 1828 and was buried in the Cathedral of Palestrina .
He was of particular importance as the Pope's delegate in the negotiations on the Concordat of 1801 , in which the French government reintroduced the Catholic Church in France under the first consul, Napoléon Bonaparte .
