Kay Pollak (born May 21, 1938 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish director .

He first studied mathematics and statistics. During his studies at Umeå University , he was involved in student theater, where he worked as a director, author and actor.

In the late 1960s, Pollak became a director of television films and series, entertainment programs, and children's programs. In 1976 he made his first feature film: Elvis! Elvis! . This was followed in 1980 by the film Secret Excursions , for which he was awarded the Swedish Guldbagge Prize for Best Director . The film was also successful in Germany and was shown in the competition at the Berlinale . His next film, Love Me! from 1986 was shown in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival.

After that, Pollak retired for a long time to write and hold seminars. As in Heaven , 2004 marked his return to the cinema after 18 years. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film . He was also nominated in eight categories of the Swedish Guldbagge Film Award, including best director and best film, but received nothing. On September 14, 2006, Wie im Himmel received the GILDE film award for the best foreign film at the film art fair in Leipzig .

Pollak is also the author of a psychological guidebook entitled Growing Through Encounters , of which more than 100,000 copies have been sold in Sweden.

Pollak has been married to Carin Pollak since 1986; the two have three children: Klara-Maria (* 1995), Johannes (* 1993) and Mattias (* 1989). Pollak has a PhD and is a university professor in mathematical statistics.
