Rolf Åke Mikael Nyqvist [ ˈmikaɛl ˈnʏˌkvist ] (also Michael Nyqvist ; born November 8, 1960 in Stockholm ; † June 27, 2017 there ) was a Swedish film and theater actor .

Life

Nyqvist grew up with Swedish adoptive parents who took him in as an infant from an orphanage. After the birth of his first child, he decided to look for his biological parents, whom he found after a long time. Nyqvist describes his childhood and the search for his birth parents in his autobiography Just after dreaming (in Swedish: När barnet lagt sig ).

At the age of 17, Nyqvist spent an exchange year at the College of Omaha , Nebraska , in the United States. There he made his first experiences with acting by playing several small roles (including in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman ). After returning to Sweden, Nyqvist took ballet lessons for a year. At the age of 19 he was accepted into the Swedish Academic School of Drama.

After Mikael Nyqvist completed his acting training, he played mainly in the theater and small roles in various film productions. After he drew attention to himself in the television adaptation of Lars Noréns Personenkreis 3.1 , he starred in a number of cinema productions, including The Way Out From 1999, Lukas Moodyssons Together! from 2000 and the Mankell film adaptation The Fifth Woman (2002). In 2002 he was awarded the Guldbagge Prize for the role of the farmer Benny Söderström in The Type from the Grave Next Door .

He became known to a larger audience in 2004 through the film As in Heaven by Kay Pollack and in 2009 through the portrayal of the journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the film adaptations of the books by Stieg Larsson , Verblendung , Verdammnis und Vergabe . In 2010 he played in the ARD / ORF co-production Kennedys Hirn (based on a novel by Henning Mankell ) alongside Iris Berben , Heino Ferch , Hans-Michael Rehberg and Karl Markovics . In 2011, Nyqvist played Tom Cruise's antagonist in Mission: Impossible 4 . In March 2012, he was cast for a role in the thriller series Zero Hour .

His German dubbing voice was mostly Michael Lott . Nyqvist was married and had two children.

On June 27, 2017, his family announced that Nyqvist had succumbed to lung cancer .
