action

In the northern Arctic Ocean , the US submarine USS Tampa Bay is tracking the Russian submarine RFS Konek in its sonar shadow when the Konek is suddenly sunk by an explosion. Shortly thereafter, a torpedo of unknown origin hits Tampa Bay and sinks it too. Defense Department Rear Adm. John Fisk is sending the USS Arkansas submarine under its newly appointed Captain Joe Glass to investigate the incident. Glass is known as an unorthodox officer, and the crew is initially skeptical of him.

At the same time is NSA analyst Jayne Norquist via satellite for unusual activity on the Russian naval base in Polyarny attention. She asks Admiral Fisk to send an observation team. This can then Lieutenant Beaman with his SEALs group by parachute settle there. Beaman's four-man team sets up an observation post on the edge of the naval base and sends close-ups to Norquist. These show that Russian President Zakarin is meeting with his Defense Minister Durov, a hardliner , in Polyarny. Suddenly Durov has the president arrested and his companion shot. It becomes apparent that Durov wants to carry out a coup and start a war with the United States.

In the meantime, the Arkansas has arrived in the Arctic Ocean and finds the underlying Tampa Bay as well as the Russian Konek not far from it . Their damage indicates that an explosion inside was the cause of the destruction and not a torpedo hit. Suddenly, Arkansas is also attacked by torpedoes fired from a Russian submarine hidden close under the ice cover. With a risky maneuver, Glass can avert the attack and destroy the Russian submarine. When the Arkansas crew hears knocking signals from the Konek , survivors, including their captain Sergei Andropov , can be rescued with the Mystic - rescue submarine they are carrying .

As a result of the incident, Norquist informs the US President . In an emergency meeting, Admiral Donnegan, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , urges preparations for a possible war with Russia. Fisk, on the other hand, suggests that Beaman's SEALs team free the Russian president and bring him to safety through nearby Arkansas . The US President accepts the proposal, but at the same time orders a task force of the US fleet to the region to be prepared. Since the Murmansk Fjord off Polyarny is peppered with submarine mines , Glass asks the Russian captain Andropov to act as a pilot . He can only convince him when he describes the critical political situation and presents photos that show that Andropov's submarine was not sunk by an American torpedo, but by an explosion inside. Apparently Durov had ordered the sabotage and attacked Tampa Bay to turn the two world powers against each other. Thanks to Andropov's knowledge of the minefields, the Arkansas managed to penetrate into the Bay of Polyarny without being noticed . Beaman and two of his team have found Oleg, Zakarin's wounded bodyguard. With his help they can free Zakarin, but Oleg and one of the US soldiers are killed in the process. Shortly before reaching the harbor basin, where they are to be picked up by the Mystic , the fugitives are caught by Durov's henchman Tretiak and his reaction force, but Martinelli, the team's sniper , who was already wounded before the start of the liberation operation , is able to clear the escape route to the water for them . Johnstone, the fourth member of the team, is also killed, so Beaman manages to get the wounded president into the Mystic by himself and then swims back to save Martinelli.

The Arkansas takes Zakarin and flees, but is pursued and bombed by a Russian destroyer . Only when Andropov informs the destroyer crew that he and the Russian president are voluntarily on board the Arkansas does the Russian destroyer captain Sutrev call off the attack. Now Durov orders the Arkansas to be destroyed with rockets from Polyarny, but Sutrev lets them shoot down with his on-board weapons shortly before the impact and in turn destroys Durov's base with rockets. The impending war is thus averted, and Glass delivers Zakarin and the rescued Russian submarine drivers to the Polyarny naval base, where he and Andropov respectfully say goodbye. Beaman and Martinelli also arrive at the Arkansas berth , which finally makes its way back to the home port accompanied by Russian warships.

reception

Jörg Gerle from Filmdienst wrote in his review: “As rough and naive as the story is sometimes pushed on land in the 'Navy Seals' subplot”, it is “convincing” in the underwater actions. [...] Hats off to so much sophistication, in times when real politics often celebrate the complete opposite. Gerle also praised the tension created by the action dramaturgy, as well as the portrayal of Captain Andropov by Mikael Nyqvist, which he mastered “with flying colors”. The film service rated the film with three out of five possible stars, just as the magazine epd Film awarded it. Its author Gerhard Midding judged the screenplay as “innocent colportage, full of pride in its amazing twists and turns and without shame about how outrageous they are”, but found it to be original “that the suspense is based on appeasement and de-escalation - there are both sides Warmongers who, however, are surrounded by figures who can think in alternatives.
