Gerard "Gerry" James Butler (born November 13, 1969 in Paisley , Scotland ) is a British actor .

Life

Gerard Butler was born on November 13, 1969, the youngest child of Margaret and Edward Butler in Paisley in the Scottish Council Area of Renfrewshire . His family is of Irish descent and of Catholic faith. In his early childhood he lived for a time in Canadian Montreal . After his parents' marriage fell apart, his mother moved back to Paisley, where Gerard grew up with his brother Brian and sister Lynn. He didn't meet his father Edward again until he was 16 years old. After that, they had a close relationship. His father died when Butler was in his early twenties.

Butler attended St Mirin's and St Margaret's Catholic High School in Paisley and then went on to study law at Glasgow University . He was very active there and was elected President of the Association of Law Students. Shortly before the end of his training with a prestigious Glasgow law firm , he was fired because he was absent too often. In February 2012, Butler stated that he had suffered from a massive drinking problem in his twenties . After losing his job in the law firm, he decided to change his life. He stopped drinking and moved to London , which marked the beginning of his acting career. He has stopped drinking alcohol since then. “A drink or two was never enough for me, I didn't know when to end, so I had to stop altogether. Today it's like I've never had a sip of alcohol. "

His acting career began when he was approached by actor Steven Berkoff in a London café , who offered him a stage role in the play Coriolanus . He later got the part as Renton in the stage version of the novel Trainspotting ( played by Ewan McGregor in the film ). His first film role was as Billy Connolly's younger brother in Her Majesty Mrs. Brown (1997).

While filming in Scotland, Butler was with his mother near the River Tay when they heard the screams of a boy who was swimming with friends. Butler jumped into the water and saved the boy from drowning. He received a certificate of bravery from the Royal Humane Society .

In 2006 he finished filming the Warner Bros. Production 300 , based on Frank Miller 's comic novel of the same name , which also achieved great success. Butler also stars in the upcoming US film Den of Thieves , written and directed by Christian Gudegast. Gudegast is the son of Eric Braeden , a US actor of German origin.

Gerard Butler worked several times as a testimonial in commercials during his career . Most recently he was seen as the face of Hugo Boss' perfume brand BOSS Bottled . In 2018, the furnishing partner ring engaged VME Butler as a testimonial for the German furniture brand Interliving.

His German dubbing voice is mostly Tobias Kluckert .

Private life

Butler has been a supporter of the Mary's Meals charity since 2010 . He attended the international development aid program in Liberia in 2014.

As of October 2011, Butler split his time between Los Angeles and Glasgow. Butler reportedly said he was interested in buying a Scottish castle.

In 2011, Butler played in a charity game for the Celtic Glasgow football club , which he has supported as a fan since childhood.
