Playing with fear (original title: Butterfly on a Wheel ; other titles: The Butterfly or Shattered ) is a Canadian - British thriller by Mike Barker from 2007 .

action

The married couple Abby and Neil Randall live in Chicago with their daughter Sophie . When Neil has an appointment and Abby wants to visit a friend, they put Sophie in the care of a babysitter. During the drive, an armed stranger appears who had made himself comfortable in the back seat. He tells that he has Sophie hostage and gives Abby his phone as evidence so she can speak to her. When asked what he would like, he replies to Neil “all you have” . Neil lies to him about the savings, but is taught better when the kidnapper can tell him the real amount to the cent.

When the couple withdraw the sum from the bank and give it to the gunman, he sets the money on fire and throws it out the window. Quite quickly, Abby and Neil realize that they are playing a bad game and that nothing will satisfy the resigning kidnapper. Abby is supposed to pass on an envelope with documents, in which unfair methods are revealed, with which Neil has landed an order for his company. One of the final tasks is for Neil to go into a house and tell the person who is there the truth. Before that, however, he is asked what he would do for his family. Neil is ready to go to extremes and is then handed a pistol with the order to kill the person in the house.

In the house it turns out that the potential victim is Neil's lover Judy, who is also an employee of the company and is also the wife of the kidnapper Tom. Neil tells Judy that Tom has figured it all out, but at first fails to kill her. When the arriving Tom threatens to kill Sophie, Neil overcomes himself and pulls the trigger. However, the gun is not loaded.

After a brief scuffle, it becomes clear that Tom wanted to give Neil a rub-off and show his wife what Neil could have done. Neil learns from Tom that Sophie is home and drives back with Abby. In the car, Abby asks questions about what's going on, but Neil initially evades. He doesn't say a word about his affair either. When he arrives at home, he finds his daughter well protected. His wife admits that she knew about his extramarital affair and that she orchestrated the kidnapping with Tom's help. Neil downplays the affair and is desperate over the financial loss. In truth, however, his savings have only appeared to have been wiped out. For Abby, however, the relationship is over. Her goal was to feel the fear and despair in Neil that she felt when she got wind of the affair.

background

Vancouver block with tower clock

The film was shot from March 10 to May 12, 2006 in Vancouver and Chicago. The tower clock, on the roof of which was shot, belongs to the 16-story Vancouver Block office tower in downtown Vancouver. Neil's entry into the building and his elevator ride were in the Marine Building , 600 m north of it. When designing and selecting the film sets, director Mike Barker and production designer Rob Gray were guided by the images of photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia . Lighting was used sparingly. The filmmakers opted for surface reflection from mirrors, glass, chrome and water (wet streets).

Production costs were estimated at 20 million US dollars . Income was around $ 7.6 million. The film had its world premiere on February 10, 2007 at the European Film Market accompanying the Berlin International Film Festival , the US cinema premiere on July 27, 2007.

The original title comes from the quote “ Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel? “From the poem An Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot by Alexander Pope . This phrase can be compared with the German phrase "Shoot at sparrows with cannons".

criticism

“Conventional thriller that expands into a guilt-and-atonement drama, but turns out all too predictably. The role change of Pierce Brosnan, who slips into the role of the supposed villain, is appealing. "
