Mavericks is a biographical feature film directed by Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted in 2012 about the life of the American surfer Jay Moriarity .

Summary

Jay Moriarity was just a kid when "Frosty" Hesson pulled him out of the surf on the Northern California coast. Seven years later, the 16-year-old surfer dreams of the wave giants, of the Mavericks that Hesson and other surfing veterans try to master every year. Despite major concerns, Hesson is persuaded to coach the boy. But the season for surfing the Mavericks is short, and Jay has to endure tough physical, mental and emotional training to survive there.

criticism

The lexicon of international films wrote that the production was "only secondarily about surfing" . Rather, the focus is on the “mentor-student relationship” , which can also be interpreted as a “symbolic father-son relationship” . The "carefully prepared climax with impressive sea shots and fast surfing scenes" succeeds in weakening existing "genre-typical clichés and linguistic platitudes" with regard to their negative effect.
