Railway management science

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Railway management science is a sub-discipline of transport science that deals with railway operations .

tasks

The aim of railroad management is to evaluate and optimize rail operations through mathematical modeling . For this purpose, this is researched in different degrees of detail using simulations and analyzes based on the queuing theory . So-called constructive procedures are also used, in which timetables are newly drawn up and compared with the actual timetable.

In railroad operations simulations, railroad operations are calculated according to certain rules with stochastic bandwidths in different variants and from the summary, performance parameters such as delay changes are determined. In the case of analyzes of rail operations, these performance indicators are determined from existing infrastructural and operational conditions.

A main focus here is on the performance analysis of the railway infrastructure and the stability of railway operations, especially the development of delays. The perspectives can be directed into the future in order to evaluate and plan future operations and infrastructure, or to the past or present in order to research current operations and infrastructure and derive improvements from them.

Computer programs

Various computer programs, such as Strele , LUKS, OpenTrack or RailSys, are used for analysis and simulation as aids in railway management.

Research institutions

In addition to the railway operations departments of Deutsche Bahn in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin, there are also railway operations research institutions in Germany at the following technical universities: RWTH Aachen , TU Braunschweig , TU Berlin , TU Darmstadt and TU Dresden .

Railway operations laboratories

In addition to virtual simulations, railway operations laboratories are also used to simulate railway operations. In these, decisions relating to transportation and dispositive decisions are not taken over by an algorithm , but controlled by human intervention. Railway operations can be simulated virtually or as a model railway .
