Henry G. Burleigh

Henry Gordon Burleigh (born June 2, 1832 in Canaan , New Hampshire , † August 10, 1900 in Whitehall , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Gordon Burleigh attended community schools. The family moved to New York in 1846 and settled in Ticonderoga , Essex County . There he went about the mining of iron ore, but also pursued business with lumber and coal. He also worked in the transport sector. He held the post of supervisor in the town of Ticonderoga in 1864 and 1865 . In 1867 he moved to Whitehall, Washington County . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1876 . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . As a delegate, he attended the Republican National Conventions in 1880, 1884, 1888, 1892 and 1896 .

In the 1882 congressional elections for the 48th Congress , Burleigh was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 17th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Walter A. Wood on March 4, 1883 . In 1884 he ran in New York's 18th electoral district for the 49th Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Frederick A. Johnson on March 4, 1885 . When he ran for re-election in 1886 , he suffered a defeat and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1887 .

He died on August 10, 1900 in Whitehall and was then buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Ticonderoga.
