Robert García (born January 9, 1933 in Bronx , New York , † January 25, 2017 in San Juan , Puerto Rico ) was an American politician . Between 1978 and 1990 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert García was born and raised in the Bronx about six years before the outbreak of World War II . He attended public schools and graduated from Hair High School in Manhattan in 1950 . During the Korean War , he served in the 3rd Infantry Division of the US Army between 1950 and 1953 . Then in 1957 he went to the City College of New York , the Community College of New York and the RCA Institute . Between 1957 and 1965 he worked as a computer technician. He served in the New York State Assembly from 1965 to 1966 and in the New York Senate from 1966 to 1978 . In 1975 he became Deputy Minority Leader - a position he held until 1978. As a delegate, he took part in the 1976 Democratic National Convention in New York City . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

He was elected as Republican Liberal in a by-election on February 21, 1978 in the 21st constituency of New York in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Herman Badillo . After his election, he switched back to the Democratic Party. He was re-elected once. In 1982 he ran for the 98th Congress in the 18th electoral district of New York . After a successful election, he succeeded Sedgwick William Green on January 4, 1983 . He was re-elected four times in a row to Congress , where he served until his resignation on January 7, 1990.

Most recently he lived in the Bronx.
