James H. Torrens, 1944

James H. Torrens (born September 12, 1874 in New York City , † April 5, 1952 ) was an American politician . Between 1944 and 1947 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James H. Torrens attended Grammar School and High School in New York City. He was the vice president and treasurer of a cigar manufacturing company. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . Between 1933 and 1947 he was first Democratic leader in the 23rd Assembly District and later in the 15th Assembly District. Torrens was elected to the 78th Congress in a by-election in the 21st  constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Joseph A. Gavagan . He took his seat in the US House of Representatives on February 29, 1944. In the 1944 congressional elections, he was re-elected to the 79th Congress . Since he on a run again in 1946 renounced, he retired after 3 March 1947 from the Congress of. He died in New York City on April 5, 1952 and was buried in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Mount Pleasant .
