Oliver C. Comstock

Oliver Cromwell Comstock (born March 1, 1780 in Warwick , Rhode Island , † January 11, 1860 in Marshall , Michigan ) was an American doctor, lawyer, politician and clergyman. Between 1813 and 1819 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Oliver Cromwell Comstock was born in Kent County during the American Revolutionary War . His family moved to Schenectady during his childhood . There he received a generous school education. He studied medicine and then practiced in Trumansburg . Between 1810 and 1812 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He became First Judge on the Seneca County's Court of Common Pleas in 1812 - a post he held until 1815.

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the 1812 congressional elections for the 13th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of New York , where he became the first representative of the district in the US House of Representatives on March 4, 1813 . In 1817 and 1818 he was First Judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Tompkins County . He gave up his work as a doctor and studied theology . After receiving his Baptist ordination, he began preaching. He was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Rochester from 1825 to 1834 . On December 20, 1836, he was appointed chaplain in the US House of Representatives - a position he held until March 3, 1837. He moved to Michigan in 1839, where he continued his ministry in Detroit . Between 1841 and 1843 he was regent at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . He then held the post of State Superintendent of Public Instruction between 1843 and 1845 . He died on January 11, 1860 in Marshall, Calhoun County and was then buried in Oakridge Cemetery .
