George West

George West (born February 17, 1823 in Bradninch , United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland , † September 20, 1901 in Ballston Spa , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 and between 1885 and 1889 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George West was born in Devonshire County during the reign of George IV . He attended community schools. In February 1849 he immigrated to the United States and settled in Ballston Spa in Saratoga County . There he went to the paper production. Between 1872 and 1876 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . As a delegate, he attended the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1880 . He was President of the First National Bank of Ballston Spa. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1880 for the 47th Congress , West was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John H. Starin on March 4, 1881 . After an unsuccessful attempt at re-election in 1882 for the 48th Congress , he left the Congress after March 3, 1883 . He ran for the 49th Congress in 1884 . After a successful election, he succeeded Edward Wemple on March 4, 1885 . He was re-elected once. Since he refused to run again in 1888 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1889.

After his time at Congress, he resumed his previous business activities. He died on September 20, 1901 in Ballston Spa and was buried there in the cemetery of the same name.
