Ellis H. Roberts

Ellis Henry Roberts (born September 30, 1827 in Utica , New York , † January 8, 1918 there ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ellis Henry Roberts attended community schools and Whitestown Seminary . In 1850 he graduated from Yale College . He then had a position as a principal at the Utica Free Academy in 1850 and 1851 . He was the owner of the Utica Morning Herald between 1851 and 1889 , where he also worked as an editor. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . He participated in the years 1864, 1868 and 1876 as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in Baltimore , Chicago and Cincinnati . In 1866 he was a member of the New York State Assembly .

In the 1870 congressional elections for the 42nd Congress , Roberts was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 21st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Alexander H. Bailey on March 4, 1871 . He was re-elected once. In his second re-election in 1874 , he suffered a defeat and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1875 .

After his time at Congress, he resumed his previous newspaper activities in Utica. Between 1889 and 1893 he was Assistant Treasurer of the United States and between 1893 and 1897 President of Franklin National Bank in New York City . He was named Treasurer of the United States on July 1, 1897 - a position he held until his resignation on June 30, 1905. Then he went back to banking. He died on January 8, 1918 in Utica and was then buried in Forest Hill Cemetery .
