Samuel S. Bowne

Samuel Smith Bowne (born April 11, 1800 in New Rochelle , New York , † July 9, 1865 with Morris , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1841 and 1843 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Smith Bowne was born in New Rochelle, Westchester County , in the early 19th century . The family moved to Otsego County and settled with Morris. There he attended community schools. After that he worked in agriculture. In 1825 he moved to Laurens . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law in 1832, he began practicing in Laurens. Then he moved to Cooperstown . In 1834 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1840 congressional elections for the 27th Congress , Bowne was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded John Holmes Prentiss on March 4, 1841 . He moved to Rochester in 1846 , where he worked as a lawyer. Between 1851 and 1855 he was a judge in Otsego County. After that he practiced as a lawyer again.
