Norton Prentiss Otis (born March 18, 1840 in Halifax , Vermont , † February 20, 1905 in Westchester County , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1905 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Norton Prentiss Otis was born in Halifax, Windham County , about six years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . He attended public schools in Halifax as well as Albany , Hudson and Yonkers . In his youth he started manufacturing elevator systems with his father - an activity that he carried out for almost 50 years. Between 1880 and 1882 he was mayor of Yonkers. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1884 . In 1900 he was President of the New York State Commission at the World's Fair in Paris . He also held the post of President of St. John's Riverside Hospital of Yonkers .

He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the 57th Congress in 1900 . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the 1902 congressional elections for the 58th Congress , Otis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded William Henry Draper on March 4, 1903 . He died before the end of his term on February 20, 1905 in Hudson Terrace, Westchester County, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery .
