Elise Stefanik (2015)

Elise Marie Stefanik (* 2. July 1984 in Albany , New York ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since January 2015 she has represented the 21st congressional electoral district of New York state in the US House of Representatives . She has been the Republican Conference Chair since May 14, 2021 .

Career

Elise Stefanik attended the Albany Academy for Girls until 2002 . She then studied at Harvard University until 2006 . From 2006 to 2009 she worked in various functions in the federal government under President George W. Bush . She was also involved in her party's election campaigns.

In the 2014 election , Stefanik was elected to the US House of Representatives in New York's 21st Congressional District in Washington, DC , where on January 3, 2015, she succeeded Democrat Bill Owens , who was no longer running. She had won the election with 55 to 34 percent against the Democrat Aaron Woolf. At 30, Elise Stefanik was the youngest woman to have been elected to the US House of Representatives. She was re-elected in 2016 , 2018 and 2020 , her current legislative period in the House of Representatives of the 117th Congress runs until January 3, 2023.

Stefanik appeared several times as a supporter of Trump: In January 2018, she voted to publish the misleading FISA memo of her party colleague Nunes on the Russia investigation. As a member of the intelligence committee , she passed a report in March 2018 that acquitted Trump of the allegation of collusion with Russia. In September 2019, she spoke out against impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump and was subsequently part of the White House advisory team .

Stefanik, who was actually considered a moderate Republican who also enjoyed working with the Democrats on a non-partisan basis, changed during Donald Trump's presidency from a deputy who rejected him to one of his most ardent supporters. After Donald Trump's election defeat by Joe Biden , she spread the version of a “stolen election” several times. In May 2021, during the internal party power struggle among the Republicans between the Trump wing and the anti-Trump wing, Stefanik was the top favorite for the office of the Republican Conference Chair , the third highest office in the Republican parliamentary group . This office was held by Liz Cheney , who is considered the most powerful Trump opponent, which is why House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy , who has been loyal to Trump, held a vote on May 12th. Liz Cheney was voted out of office and Stefanik was elected her successor two days later.
