Kathleen Maura Rice (born February 15, 1965 in New York City ) is an American politician . She has represented New York State in the US House of Representatives since January 2015 .

Career

Kathleen Rice grew up in Garden City , Long Island , where she graduated from high school in 1983 . She then studied until 1987 at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC After a subsequent law degree at the Touro Law Center on Long Island, she was admitted to the bar in 1991. In 1992, she became the assistant district attorney for Brooklyn . In 1999, she became an assistant federal attorney in Philadelphia . Between 2005 and 2014, she served as the Nassau County District Attorney . Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . In 2010 she ran unsuccessfully in her party's primary for the office of Attorney General of New York. In 2013 she became chair of the New York State District Attorneys Association.

In the 2014 congressional election , Rice was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fourth constituency of New York, where she succeeded Carolyn McCarthy , who was no longer running, on January 3, 2015 . She won with 53:47 percent of the vote against Republican Bruce Blakeman. Since she was confirmed in office in 2016, she is also a member of the 115th Congress of the United States , which met on January 3, 2017 .
