Marcellus Hugh Evans (born September 22, 1884 in Brooklyn , New York , † November 21, 1953 ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1935 and 1941 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Marcellus Hugh Evans was born about four months after Alaska was given civil administration and renamed the District of Alaska , in the then still independent city of Brooklyn and grew up there. During this time he attended the St. John the Baptist School and the St. James Academy . In 1910 he graduated from Fordham University's law department . He was admitted to the bar in 1910 and then began practicing in Brooklyn. He was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1922 and 1926 and the New York Senate between 1927 and 1934 .

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1934 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Loring M. Black, Jr. on January 4, 1935 . He was re-elected twice. In 1940 he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after January 3, 1941 Congress of. He then ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for the 77th Congress .

After the end of his last tenure, he resumed his practice as a lawyer. He died in Brooklyn on November 21, 1953 and was then buried in Calvary Cemetery in Long Island City .
