District of Alaska was the official name of Alaska from May 17, 1884 to August 24, 1912 .

history

The District emerged from the Department of Alaska and became the Alaska Territory in 1912 , the forerunner of the 49th state of the United States .

The district's first commander-in-chief was General Jefferson C. Davis of the United States Army . The civil government was established by US President Chester A. Arthur . After Alaska as Department from 1867 to 1884 the jurisdiction of changing US institutions such as the Ministry of Finance had been subordinate, it was as District own government.

During the district's time, the Klondike River gold rush , which began in 1896, attracted thousands of prospectors to the Canadian Yukon Territory , many of them via Skagway or Dyea and via the Chilkoot or White Pass in the Panhandle of Alaska to the gold fields in the Yukon arrived.

1902 began with the construction of the Alaska Railroad , which connects Seward with Fairbanks since 1914 .

After the district was given its own government, the call for a seat in the United States Congress of Alaska was loud, which was granted with the establishment of the Alaska Territory in 1912 .
