John Henry Kinkead

John Henry Kinkead (born December 10, 1826 in Smithfield , Fayette County , Pennsylvania , † August 15, 1904 in Carson City , Nevada ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

John Henry Kinkead attended Community School in his home country and later Lancaster High School . He then worked successfully as a businessman who was known from Missouri to Utah and California, and especially in Nevada.

Kinkead's first public office was that of Nevada Territory Treasury Secretary , a position he held between 1862 and 1864. He was also a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1863 . Kinkead won the Republican primary for governor of Nevada and was elected governor in 1878. During his tenure, he promoted the expansion of the mining industry and the improvement of the roads. The VCT Railroad between Virginia City and Carson City was completed between 1869 and 1870, and between Carson City and Reno in 1872. After choosing not to run for re-election, Kinkead was nominated and elected the first Territorial Governor of the District of Alaska , an office he held between 1884 and 1885.

John H. Kinkead was married to Elizabeth Fall and they adopted a child. He died on August 15, 1904 in Carson City and was buried in the local Lone Mountain Cemetery .
