Michael J. "Mike" Dunleavy (* 5. May 1961 in Scranton , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . As of December 3, 2018, he has been the 12th governor of the state of Alaska .

Family, education and work

Mike J. Dunleavy was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In 1983 he received a bachelor's degree in history from Misericordia University . He received a Masters in Teaching Science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks .

Dunleavy is married to Rose and has three children.

Political career

In August 2012, Dunleavy ran in the primary election for a seat in the Alaska Senate , Republican. He was able to prevail against incumbent Linda Menard. He won the main election in November 2012. In January 2013 he was sworn in as a senator from District D. In 2015 he moved from District D to District E.

In 2017, Dunleavy announced that he was running for the governor of Alaska. In September 2017, he initially suspended his campaign due to heart problems. In December 2017, he announced that he would resume his candidacy. On January 15, 2018, he resigned from the Alaska Senate in order to fully focus on his candidacy. Together with running mate Kevin Meyer , Dunleavy ran for the main election in November 2018 and was able to prevail against Democrat Mark Begich with 53% of the votes cast . Dunleavy was sworn in to succeed Bill Walker on December 3, 2018, and has served as the 12th Governor of Alaska since then.
