Michael Anthony Stepovich or Mike Stepovich (* 12. March 1919 in Fairbanks , Alaska ; † 14. February 2014 in San Diego , California ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), the 1957-1958 governor of Alaska territory was . He was of Montenegrin origin on his father's side and Croatian on his mother's side .

Career

Stepovich graduated from Notre Dame Law School . After that, in 1947, he married Matilda Stepovich. He represented the 4th District in the Territorial House of Representatives of Alaska between 1951 and 1952, and in the Territorial Senate from 1953 to 1958. Stepovich was governor of the Alaska Territory from 1957 to 1958. He then ran for a US Senate seat in 1958 , where he suffered one defeat. It was the same in his candidacy for governor in 1962 and in the Republican primaries for governor in 1966. Stepovich was a delegate to the Republican National Convention for Alaska in 1964 .

family

One of Stepovich's children is Nick Stepovich (* 1958). He is also the father-in-law of former NBA basketball player John Stockton . Stepovich died on February 14, 2014 in San Diego of complications from a fall a week earlier at the age of 94.
