Waino Edward Hendrickson
Waino Edward Hendrickson (born June 18, 1896 in Juneau , Alaska , † June 22, 1983 Juneau, Alaska) was an American politician and acting governor of the Alaska Territory .
Career
Waino Edward Hendrickson was born in Juneau on June 18, 1896, after his family immigrated from Finland . He decided to embark on a political career in 1946 when he was elected mayor of Juneau, an office he held until 1953. He was also a member of the territorial House of Representatives between 1948 and 1953.
Hendrickson was named Secretary of State of the Territory in 1953 under Governor B. Frank Heintzleman . He held this office until Alaska was annexed to the United States on January 3, 1959 as the 49th state . He served twice as acting governor, the first time in 1957 and the second time between 1958 and 1959. Hendrickson was the first governor to be born in Alaska.
He died on June 22, 1983 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Juneau.
