Jay Sterner Hammond (born July 21, 1922 in Troy , New York , † August 1, 2005 in Port Alsworth , Alaska ) was an American politician of the Republican Party and governor of the state of Alaska.

Career

Jay Hammond was born in Troy in 1922. He served in the US Navy in 1942 and served as a naval fighter pilot during World War II . He then moved to Alaska in 1946 and graduated from the University of Alaska in 1948 . Between 1946 and 1956 he was a bush pilot, trapper, guide, and principal for the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

He decided to embark on a political career in 1959 by being elected to the Alaska House of Representatives, where he remained until 1965. He then worked from 1965 to 1967 as a manager of the Bristol Bay Borough . Hammond was elected to the Alaska Senate in 1967 , to which he served until 1972 as Majority Leader , Chairman of the Rules and Resources Committees, and President of the Senate. From 1972 to 1974 he was Mayor of Bristol Bay Borough .

Alaska Governor

Hammond was elected Governor of Alaska in 1974 and re-elected in 1978, allowing him to serve from December 2, 1974 to December 6, 1982. He has served on the Alaska Humanities Forum, International North Pacific Fisheries Convention Advisory Committee, Alaska Land Use Council, Alaska Airmen's Association, Inc., Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the National Rifle Association.

Between 1985 and 1992 he produced a TV series called "Jay Hammond's Alaska". He was also married to Bella Gardiner, with whom he had three daughters.

Honors

He was named Alaskan of the Year in 1994 and was awarded the Medal of Merit from the University of Alaska.
