Steve Cowper Camberling (* 21st August 1938 in Petersburg , Virginia ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party , the 1986-1990 Governor of the State of Alaska was.

Career

Steve Cowper was born in Virginia in 1938 and grew up in Kinston , North Carolina . He received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He then worked in the US Army Medical Corps and the Army Reserve and then served three years as a marine lawyer in Norfolk , Virginia. He then moved to Fairbanks , Alaska in 1968 , where he served as the assistant district attorney for rural Alaska and Fairbanks. He also went to Vietnam as a freelance correspondent in 1970 and toured all of Asia . Upon his return, he became a partner in an air taxi and cargo company, wrote a political column for the Fairbanks Daily News miner , taught a college course on Alaska, and was also a diver for the University of Alaska marine research team .

He was later elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1974 , where he served two terms. Cowper was elected Governor of Alaska in 1986, an office he held from December 1, 1986 to December 3, 1990.
