Thomas Christmas Riggs Jr. (born October 17, 1873 in Ilchester , Howard County , Maryland , † January 16, 1945 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician and governor of the Alaska Territory between 1918 and 1921. He was a member of the Democratic Party and belonged to the Episcopal Church .

Career

Thomas Riggs, son of Thomas Riggs and Catherine Winter (Gilbert) Riggs, was born on October 17, 1873 in Ilchester. He graduated from Princeton University . He then worked in the lumber business in the District of Alaska between 1897 and 1901 and in the Boundary Survey from 1903 to 1905 . He then worked as an engineer for the Alaskan Boundary Survey between 1906 and 1913 . On April 30, 1913, he married Renee Marie Coudert. He was later named governor of the Alaska Territory, an office he held until 1921. He was also a delegate from the Alaska Territory to the Democratic National Convention in 1920 . He later served as a United States Commissioner for the International Boundary Commission between 1936 and 1945 . He also presided over the Fairbanks Division , which had authority over the location and construction of government railways in Alaska prior to the creation of the governor of Alaska.

He died on January 16, 1945 in Washington, DC and was buried in Greenmount Cemetery in Baltimore .

Honors

The American Geographical Society named Riggs Glacier in his honor in 1947 .
